HylaFAX The world’s most advanced open source fax server. So I’m not sending directly using sendfax. Or if it’s a binary, its hylafx file. It has “always”, “never”, and “when delivered”. I’m looking more along the lines of “Final status”.

Man page of NOTIFY

I want to know if it failed completely. However, I do not want to know that it requed it 8 times.

This is really a convience to our users. We don’t want to spam their inboxes when the fax is undeliverable. However, we still want them to know when it’s htlafax successful. We only one them to get one possible email for each fax.

Re: [hylafax-users] notify

Whether it failed or worked. Admittedly, WHFC is a superior client. However, winprint hylafax is much simplier.

We can show them how to use winprint hylafax in about 10 seconds. WHFC can be accidently exited too easy.

Also, it gives them too many options. Some users get scared when faced with too much. The only possible options to the user are the fax number and return email and to save that fax number in the address book. If it’s too difficult, we found that they’ll get up and use the paper fax. We’ll probably use WHFC once people get addicted to faxing from their desk.

For now, I think winprint hylafax is the best fit. Project hosted by iFAX Solutions.

These descriptions are frequently provided by the publishing company—not the author—so I take them with a certain grain of salt. Abstract Models for Literary Historywas ironically provocative and tantalizing. Verso Books got me: In Graphs, Maps, Trees, Moretti attempts to examine the boundaries of literary genre theory—how collections of books that share similar structural elements and literary traits come to be defined as their own unique genres over time—to devise a method of analysis that redefines these boundaries using spatial, rather than linear, forms of diagramming.

In using graphsMoretti argues that quantitative analysis can help spread the flow of data and information through a wide scale of geography and space, allowing us to better understand cultural trends, patterns, and changes over time: The Moretti model provides several important insights for historians.

For one, it represents a possible method for better defining the scale of a historical research project. This question of scale—one that has perplexed historians for many, many years—looms large in determining the geographical and chronological scope of a given topic.

For instance, if I were to research the history of slavery, the question of scale could quickly derail my endeavor. Should I focus on slavery in one or more countries, or would it be more appropriate to go smaller and look at one or more states, cities, or communities?

What type of sources could I use to aid my research? Such a diagram lets me create a base for my project and helps me discern specific patterns within the history of slavery that fracno merit further exploration.

Graphs, Maps, Trees: Abstract Models for a Literary History

Spatial visualizations help mordtti see trends, patterns, and changes over time that may not be readily observed through a textual, linear format. When describing Geographic Information Systems GISa relatively new mapping technology used for analysis and interpretation of trends and patterns, the editors of the book The Spatial Humanities: The power of GIS for the humanities lies in its ability to integrate information from a common location, regardless of format, and to visualize the results in combinations of transparent layers on a map of the grsphs shared by the data.

Internet mapping has made this concept widely recognized and accessible, but this use of GIS only hints at its potential for the humanities. Finally, I think Moretti proves that we as historians must diversify our skills and look to other disciplines in creating collaborative projects, whether in print, public exhibition, or digital format.

We have talked in class about how digital fanco is grxphs public history with academic history. Looking beyond history, the digital humanities is integrating fields of study that were once considered distinct and separate entities.

In constructing various models for literary history, Moretti utilizes ideas from literary studies, history, math and science.

Graphs, Maps, Trees: Abstract Models for a Literary History by Franco Moretti

The fact that we are reading a book by a professor of literature as a guidebook for historical research demonstrates the point that we need to look beyond our field. We must know our literature, our geography, our anthropology, our quantitative methods, and our scientific diagrams.

We must understand computers, GIS, code, counting, diagramming, and graphing. Abstract Models for Literary History Brooklyn: Verso Maos,18, Bodenhamer, John Corrigan, and Trevor M. Harris, The Spatial Humanities: Reblogged this on Exploring the Past and commented:.

Great job summarizing something all of us are still a little confused by!

Finally, I especially like the way you apply the need for scale to the need to broaden our understanding of the historical profession. If historians can understand how to use the tools prized by other fields instead of just knowing what professionals to call on, we will be better equipped to work with others. Born of humble stock, his grandfather was a foreman stonemason in the royal employ. Privation had made a man of him, and in his works he proves himself a poet of deep feeling and considerable power of expression. The stirring incidents in the political emancipation of Portugal inspired his muse, and he describes the bitterness of exile, the adventurous expedition to Terceira, the heroic defence of Oporto, and the final combats of liberty.

In he founded the Panorama in imitation of the English Penny Magazine, and there and in Illustraco he published the historical tales which were afterwards collected into Lendas e Narratives; in the same year he became royal librarian at the Ajuda Palace, which enabled him to continue his studies of the past.

The Panorama had a large circulation and influence, and Herculano’s biographical sketches of great men and his articles of literary and historical criticism did much to educate the middle class by acquainting them with the story of their nation, and with the progress of knowledge and the state of letters in foreign countries.

Grave as most of his writings are, they include a short description of a crossing from Jersey to Granville, in which he satirizes English character and customs, and reveals an unexpected sense of humour. A rare capacity for tedious work, a dour Catonian rectitude, a passion for truth, pride, irritability at criticism and independence of character, are alexxndre marks of Herculano as a man. He could be broken but never bent, and his rude frankness accorded with his hard, sombre face, and alienated mens sympathiea though it did not lose him their respect.

His lyrism is vigorous, feeling, austere and almost entirely subjective and personal, while his pamphlets are distinguished by energy of conviction, strength of affirmation, and contempt, for weaker and more ignorant opponents. His History of Portugal is a great but incomplete monument.

A lack of imagination and of the philosophic spirit prevented him from penetrating or drawing characters, but his analytical gift, joined to persevering toil and honesty hdrculano purpose enabled him to present a faithful account of ascertained facts and a satisfactory and lucid explanation of political and economic events. His more important works have gone through many editions and his name is still one to conjure with.

Sign in Create an account. Objectivity has a history, and it is full of surprises. In Objectivity, Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison chart the emergence of objectivity in the mid-nineteenth-century sciences–and show how the concept differs from its alternatives, truth-to-nature and trained judgment.

This is a story objecgivity lofty epistemic ideals fused with workaday practices in the making of scientific images. From the eighteenth through the early twenty-first centuries, the images that reveal the deepest commitments of the empirical sciences–from anatomy to crystallography–are those featured in scientific atlases, the compendia that teach practitioners what is worth looking at and how to look at it.

Galison and Daston use atlas images to uncover a hidden history of scientific objectivity and its rivals. Whether galiwon atlas maker idealizes an image to capture the essentials in the name of truth-to-nature or refuses to erase even the most incidental detail in the name of objectivity or highlights patterns in the name of trained judgment is a decision enforced by an ethos as well as by an epistemology. As Daston and Galison argue, atlases shape the subjects as well as the objects of science.

To pursue objectivity–or truth-to-nature or trained judgment–is simultaneously to cultivate a distinctive scientific self wherein knowing and knower converge.

Moreover, the very point at which they visibly converge is in the very act of seeing not as a separate individual but as a member of a particular scientific community. Embedded in the atlas image, therefore, are the traces of consequential choices about knowledge, persona, and collective sight. Objectivity is a book addressed to anyone interested in the elusive and crucial notion of objectivity– and in saston it means to peer into the world scientifically.

The guidelines are based on a systematic evidence review. In an effort to build consensus, draft recommendations were posted online for public comment, and 25 organizations participated in a guideline symposium where they discussed and voted on each recommendation. The guidelines state that women younger than 21 years should not be screened for cervical cancer, regardless of age of sexual initiation or other risk factors. Human papillomavirus HPV infections are common and generally transient, and most cervical lesions regress without intervention.

Overtreatment leads to net harm in young women. Guidelinew women 21 to 29 years of age, the new guidelines recommend screening ascpc cytology alone every three years. Annual screening of women at any age is not recommended because it results in only a slightly greater reduction in cancer risk but twice the number of colposcopies compared with screening every three years. There is no statistically significant difference in cancer reduction between a two- and three-year screening interval, and the shorter two-year screening interval results in a 40 percent increase in the number of colposcopies.

Women 30 to 65 years of age should be screened with cytology and HPV testing i. This permits a longer interval between screenings, with cancer incidence rates similar to or lower than screening with cytology alone at shorter intervals, as well as fewer colposcopies. A study showed that the risk of invasive cancer three years after a negative Papanicolaou Pap smear result was 0.

Most new HPV infections in women older than 65 years clear spontaneously. The potential harm outweighs the small potential benefit of screening women in this age group. Vaginal cuff smear following hysterectomy for benign reasons appears to be a common clinical practice that is lacking in proven gidelines and that accounts for untold medical costs and patient discomfort.

Despite this, more than 10 million women continue to have this unnecessary screening. Vaginal cancer is rare, with an age-specific incidence similar to or less than that of other cancers for which screening is not performed, such as breast cancer in men. Abnormal vaginal cytology is seldom of clinical importance. ASCCP-sponsored consensus recommendations for the management of abnormal cytology results were published in The short-term risk of CIN3 in these women is far less than when an HPV-positive test is associated with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance ASCUS or with low-grade squamous intraepithelial guidrlines, and most transient infections clear within 12 months.

Therefore, these women should not be referred directly for colposcopy. The risk of precancerous lesions in these women does not warrant increased surveillance over women who have negative cytology and negative HPV test results. The biggest gain in guiedlines cervical cancer incidence and mortality can be achieved by increasing screening rates among women who have not been screened or who have not been screened regularly.

Co-testing with cytology and HPV testing every five years preferred or every three years with cytology alone acceptable. Co-testing with cytology and HPV testing every five years or every three years with cytology alone. Discontinue if three negative Pap smear results or two negative HPV test results in past 10 years, if most recent test was within the past five years.

The title of the the book under review at the moment is somewhat deceptive.

While Art Of Attack In Chess is, indeed, about attacking play in chess, it is specifically about attacking the opponent’s castled King. Almost the entire pages of it! At first this may seem a bit improbable.

Art of Attack in Chess by Vladimir Vuković

However, as I progressed through the book, it was clear that the author, Vladimir Vukovicwas drawing me into to a treatise of precision and depth, the likes of which I have not previously read, at least as far as chess literature is concerned. That may sound daunting, but Art Of Attack is actually an amazing work to read. The chapters elucidate the minutiae of the attack on the King, leaving no stone unturned, and yet each follows logically from the previous, slowly binding all the concepts into a cohesive whole.

It is sometimes the case that Vukovic leaves issues incomplete when they are only tangential to the current chapter, but he returns to them in later chapters when the previously hanging hcess is more relevant, and then all questions are answered.

Book Review: Art Of Attack In Chess

The signal to noise ratio in Art Of Attack is very high, and therefore the information is very densely packed. Occasionally Vukovic will comment that he has eliminated some variations from his examples for brevity or clarity, but with how intensely he vladimif each example with myriad variations, it is hard to believe he left anything out. Admittedly, Vukovic drew on the analyses of those that came before him, but the author has clearly toiled long and hard to add his own analyses and interpretations of games.

And in the copy that I own, John Nunn adds his own commentary and corrections to the original Vukovic text. Nunn clearly did not just mechanically convert the old text to algebraic form.

He has devoted considerable energy into giving this book the attention to detail and respect that it deserves. So, it’s intense but readable, but what’s in it?

A large part of Art Of Attack is devoted to what Vukovic considers to be the preconditions necessary for an attack against the castled king to proceed. Among these are the attacker’s control of the center, prevention vlarimir counterplay on the side of the board opposite the opponent’s castled king, vladijir posting of the attacker’s pieces, and a weakening of the castled King’s defenses.

It is also important that the would-be attacker not commit to the attack until all the preconditions are met, and Vukovic writes at some length, with examples, about what happens when the attack begins too early or too late. Too early and the attack will fizzle, while zttack the attack begins to late, the attacker may have missed his window of opportunity.

Along cbess way, the author touches on subjects that are related to the attack on the castled King, but are useful bits of knowledge in their own right. There is a substantial discussion about castling itself: The comparison between kingside castling and queenside castling is very instructive.

On my first read through any chess book, I sit in front of a chess attacl and play through all the main lines, and occasionally play through variations when they seem particularly interesting.

That’s what I did with Art Of Attack In Chesshowever I played through many more variations than I would with most books and yet I left many enticing variants for later reads – otherwise I’d never get to write this review! In truth, I generally learn most effectively buy working my way through a book from front to back, understanding the main points of the text, and then returning to the book a few months later to absorb the details.

This book will definitely warrant fine comb treatment in the near future. I normally study books while at a proper wooden chess board, but I suggest that a digital chess board may be more appropriate. Trying to keep track of all the variations, even in a single example, is a lot of work.

Let your computer help you out for a change! Now we come to the question of who should read this book. Art Of Attack In Chess is certainly readable by anyone of reasonable intelligence, but there is a certain amount of experience required to understand the information well enough for it to be useful.

If you are still working on basic tactics and haven’t yet learned a reasonable amount of positional play, this book isn’t for you. If, on the other hand, you meet those two requirements, I think you should be able to gain a considerable amount of useful information from Vukovic, and with concerted effort applied to each topic in this book you will be repaid with improvement in your game for a long, long time. So, there you have it: I’m putting it into rotation as one of my go-to books for study.

As always, I’m Stick, your resident wordslinger, and I’ll see y’all out there on the gridiron! Jan 28, Chess Tactics For Champions.
