This isn’t hard-boiled, by comparison this feels slow, emotional, thoughtful, sentimental and sad. A scenario like this would probably not happen in the United States today.
The book reads as a Perry Mason episode, and does not bog itself down with too kan verbage. Woolrich in an effort to put yet another layer of paranoia on the existential cake leaves us with a footnote that just doesn’t ring true given the characters he has drawn for One of the few woolricn I’ve ever read twice actually three times.

For those who’ve read a lot of the great author’s work it is fabulous, but others may have some difficulty getting into the style and flow. But I get awfully tired of reading about the same happy hookers and highly capable, critical-but-nurturant wives all the time.

The suspense is unnerving as we see her life built on a monumental lie inevitably unravel.
The ending is different than the movie so I will not spoil it, but for an afternoon of fun light reading, and a “Who did it? Woolrich creates the suspense so successfully that the novel becomes a page turner for the rest of it’s duration.

The train derails, but not before Patrice Hazzard asks Helen Georgesson to try on her wedding ring. She mn befriended by another couple who are also expecting and a train wreck and mistaken identity occurs.
The three have just a day to become friends, because that night the train goes off the track and the Hazzards are killed. So I was curious to examine this again.

Since I obviously did not remember any of the details, and was enjoying the story, I plodded on to the end. Once I realized where Woolrich was taking the story, I felt a chill. Notify me of new comments via email. After Patrice hands Helen her wedding band so she can wash her hands in the rest room, the train crashes, killing the Hazzards, but Helen survives. A woman befriends a wealthy newlywed couple on a train. And with a cover like thisI figured it would be pretty creepy, or at least unsettling.
This setup creates tension as she lives under the fear that her secret will somehow be discovered. What little plans she has are to go back to San Francisco and start her life over.
